Learning Beyond the Classroom
Classrooms and the school building are important learning environments, but outdoor activities and environmental studies also provide powerful learning opportunities. Education beyond the classroom contributes to a range of important societal goals that can promote health and well-being, prosocial behavior and community cohesion. Our Friday elective program, extended field trips, and after school enrichment offerings are valuable components in a well-rounded and rich educational experience, providing settings in which young people can engage in self-discovery and develop a broader contextual awareness for learning. Our students benefit from regular opportunities to learn in outdoor settings, understand natural places over time, and put theory into practice beyond the classroom. Education outside the classroom often incorporates responsible action and critical reflection in ways that are essential in the process of learning through inquiry.
