WELCOME to Kindergarten! I am so excited at all of the wonderful experiences we are going to share this year. School is rapidly approaching and so I am hoping that you are all seizing every precious moment of summer break! I look forward to seeing you all in September. I can’t wait to have special time with each of you!
Parents, I would love for you to drop your students at SPS on Thursday, 9/1 from 3:00 – 4:00 to spend time getting to know me and fellow students. Also, for all new families to SPS, join your buddy parents, SPS Staff and Board Members at an “adult evening social” on Thursday, 9/1 from 6:30 – 8:00pm in the SPS Commons. Mark your calendar for our Elementary Back-to-School Night on Thursday, 9/15. There will be a parent social from 5:00-5:30 followed by elementary sessions from 5:30-6:00 and 6:00-6:30. The large group meeting will be held in the gym from 6:30-7:15 pm. Childcare is available.
In Kindergarten we work very hard to promote TEAMWORK! The children will work together as a team to get things done. Getting involved with our whole school, families, and community is also a big part of being in Kindergarten. Not only are we a team, we are also a family—it is very important that we show each other respect and kindness. We will work on being respectful to friends, families, and teachers.
This letter includes a variety of information that may be helpful to you and I would like to thank you for taking the time to read through it. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me before school begins. I’m here if you need me! I feel that a strong parent-teacher relationship is an important factor in a child’s education. If we work together as a team we can provide your child with a higher quality of education. I look forward to getting to know all of you. Here’s to an AWESOME year!

Morning Arrival: Daily Rituals for Independence! Please help!
Drop off is between 8:05 and 8:10am. Class starts promptly at 8:15. Since we have a morning routine that starts right at 8:15. During these first few weeks until we have established our morning routines, I ask that you help your child with the following until we have established our morning patterns:
- Put his/her jacket and backpack on their hooks in their cubbies.
- Place their two nut free snacks in the top of their cubby.
- Please have your child put their lunch in the lunch bin located at the entrance of the kindergarten classroom.
- Please allow your child to enter the classroom, find their name tags on their desk space, and find a book to read at their desk. I usually have a celebrated thematic topic or author study that the children can choose from until we develop our own book bins.
- Please be mindful of the weather. The beginning of the school year often has cool mornings with hot afternoons, labeled water bottles are welcome.
- Once the weather changes, sweaters and coats are a must along with mittens and gloves. Even slippers to change into once boot weather comes our way!
- Take note of PE days. Proper gym shoes makes a HUGE difference for the success of PE. (tuesday and thursday’s)
Afternoon Pick up
At pickup time please remember that I will not release your child until I see a parent or designated guardian.
The child will give me a thumbs up when they connect with you. Parents and Childcare providers, please give me a thumbs up too. If someone new will be picking up your child that he/she is not familiar with or does not usually pick them up, please let me know so I can be aware of who your child should go with that day. If you are having another parent in class pick up, please let me know as well. *I have a notebook posted right outside the classroom if there any day-to-day details I might need.
I am a strong believer in open and honest communication between teachers and parents. Please feel free to drop me a note, touch base email, quick text, any time you wish to express a comment or concern. I am extremely prompt with my replies and therefore, if you do not hear from me I simply have not received it.
There are many ways I will communicate:
KG Notebook: There is a spiral notebook sitting on the table outside the classroom. If there is something important that you feel I need to know about and aren’t able to speak to me before class, please jot it down in the notebook. The information you share can be anything- from having a tough morning, not sleeping well night before, an upcoming vacation, and early pick up time, etc.
KG communication folders: These file folders sit on the crate right outside our door. You can also use these parent files to send out information to the class as long as you let me know. Also if you are putting invitation in the KG folders, you must be giving one to every person in the class. If you are not putting one in every folder, please find an alternative method of delivery. Please check this file daily.
Canvas: Canvas is our student/parent portal for learning information, and is accessible via the link on the homepage of the school website. This year during classroom breakout sessions at Back to School Night, teachers will provide parents with hands on training on how to navigate Canvas.
Newsletters will be posted on canvas to give you a snap shot of the month. These newsletters will contain important dates as well as what we will be studying and working on during the week. Please check canvas weekly. We will review this at Back to School Night.
Please contact me if you have any questions. My cell phone is: (541) 419-9458. Text me during the day if an emergency arises or contact me via my email address at email@example.com.
I would love a letter or email from each of you regarding your student (firstname.lastname@example.org). I would enjoy hearing all the little things that your child enjoys, what you find special about your child, things I should know to help me best learn how to help your child learn. Often these small tidbits are a way for me to help your child feel safe and welcomed.
Although we will chat often and be communicating weekly, I will schedule informal conferences to meet with you throughout the term. I’m a huge believer in communication. Please be comfortable in sharing with me if your child is having a rough start to their day or other details. These small nuances can change the way I work with your child and help ease any worries, or unsettled thoughts, and help make a wonderful and successful learning day.
Parent Participation & Volunteering
Parent volunteering is key to the success of our students and school. Each family is required to volunteer a total of 40 hours per school year. In a future newsletter, we will provide you with a link to view and sign up online in areas that suit your interests.
Our pin parents will help you set this up and they will be sending out a message to sign up online. Classroom volunteering will begin in October.
PLEASE SEND IN TWO nut free SNACKS every day. We have snack each day at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm. It is important to send in two nut free snacks in your child’s backpack every day as I do not supply snacks in kindergarten.
Each day the KG students have lunch recess at 11:00-11:15, with lunch following 11:15-11:35. PLEASE make sure to label all items in your child’s lunchbox (i.e. cups, ice packs, silverware, etc.), so that we make sure everything goes home to the rightful owner. You can certainly include nut products for lunchtime as we have a nut free table for our children with allergies.
Absences and Tardies
It is very important that your child is on time for school. We start our morning promptly at 8:15. If your child is going to be absent please call the front desk and let them know. If you have scheduled absences that you know about in advance please let me know as well.
Above all else, know that in my classroom your child will be loved and will be safe. We will learn to wonder and freely ask questions, explore our learning, and raise the bar of our own expectations. We will dream big, take chances, and simply dive into the world of kindergarten. “Children will have the opportunity to play and learn in ways that respond to their levels of growth.” (Yardsticks, Chip Wood)
