FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How does a student transition into a Core Knowledge or I.B. school from another school?

To ensure a smooth transition, students are monitored through teacher-parent meetings, on-line grade reports and by receiving additional assistance when needed. Because topics are revisited in greater depth throughout the grades, new students will gain the knowledge needed for a successful experience.

2. How do the Core Knowledge and I.B. curriculums address math and reading?

Seven Peaks teaches math and science in accordance to the State Standards required of all Oregon schools. We use Everyday Math curriculum in the elementary classes and Glencoe's Pre-Algebra and Algebra series for our middle school students. Additional challenging curriculum is available for accelerated students.

3. How are students challenged or assisted in the classroom if needed?

Teachers differentiate lessons and homework to meet the needs of their students. Classroom aides and parent volunteers work regularly with the teachers to monitor small groups and provide extra challenges in the different subject areas.

4. What sports programs are available for Seven Peaks students?

Our Athletic Director provides instruction and practice in many sports throughout the school year in the regular P.E. classes. Seven Peaks also hosts extracurricular Basketball, Volleyball, Cross Country and Tennis teams. In addition, students participate in Soccer, Football, Lacrosse and Swimming in association with the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District and the Bend-La Pine School District teams.

5. Does Seven Peaks enroll students with special needs?

Yes, however we do not have a special education teacher on staff which limits our ability to service a student’s IEP. Prior to enrollment we evaluate a student's needs to ensure they can be met.

6. How much parent volunteering is required?

We believe that family involvement is an essential part of a child's education. We require 20 to 50 hours per year of volunteering, depending on the number of students a family has enrolled at the school and their grade level. We work to utilize parent interests and skills to find well-suited volunteer projects. These include helping in the classroom, teaching elective classes, fundraising, facility maintenance, and more. Students can earn volunteer hours as well by participating in community service projects.

7. How well do students transition into a larger public high school from Seven Peaks?

Our administrative team, including our Counselor, schedule informational visits from area high schools. We help to ensure appropriate high school class placements through teacher recommendations. Our students are prepared for honors courses and transition easily to larger schools because they are strong self-advocates. Seven Peaks' graduates are excited to enter high school and are ready for a positive high school experience.

8. What is the admission deadline?

New students must submit an application prior to March 13, 2009, after which a lottery will be held for all open seats. Current students must re-enroll by March 2, 2009 to reserve a place for the following year. (Please see the Admissions section of the web site for detailed information on the admissions process and key dates.)

9. What are the admissions requirements?

Although we do not have any formal academic requirements in place for admission at this time, Seven Peaks is looking for students who are motivated learners and are willing to make positive contributions to our school environment.

Prior to applying, students should visit our school and sit in on classes. Applicants will then submit an application and a $50 non-refundable application fee. Students will also submit a current transcript, a teacher recommendation and a student questionnaire.
