CORE KNOWLEDGE CURRICULUM

Seven Peaks teaches the Core Knowledge curriculum which was developed on the premise that a core of common learning is necessary to ensure a sound elementary education. The curriculum was developed by Professor E. D. Hirsch, author of Cultural Literacy and The Schools We Need, and is based on research in cognitive psychology as well as the study of the most effective school systems. Hirsch argues that to attain academic excellence and higher literacy, schooling should provide a specific core curriculum to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) PROGRAM

Seven Peaks will begin implementing the IB program in our middle school in the fall of 2009. We plan to have a fully-accredited IB program in place by the end of the 2010-2011 school year. This is an international system designed to help students develop the knowledge, attitudes and critical thinking skills needed to participate actively in our changing world. The middle school IB curriculum will be consistent with the Core Knowledge curriculum, and the IB methods of teaching and evaluation will enhance the learning experience.

In the IB program, students study the following subjects: English, Foreign Language, Humanities, Technology, Mathematics, Art, Science and Physical Education. Each subject is taught using the standardized methods of the "Five Areas of Interaction."

Assessments include problem-solving investigations, organized debates, experimentation, analysis and reflection. These assessments provide feedback on the students' thinking processes as well as the finished piece of work. There is also an emphasis on self-assessment and peer-assessment within the program. CORE VIRTUES CURRICULUM

All Seven Peaks students participate in the Core Virtues curriculum as a way to promote character development and social consciousness. Each month a core virtue is emphasized. Some of these Virtues are: Respect, Persistence, Independent Thinking, Compassion, Empathy, Generosity and Continuous Learning. Students complete a variety of in-school activities and community service projects followed by service learning. These experiences help students understand, apply and reflect on the virtue. School-wide recognition is given to students who exemplify the virtue for the month.
