Design Innovation is a way of thinking rather than a curriculum. Students have the freedom to explore using design and hands-on learning which empowers them to discover talents, skills, and interests. One of the many things that makes Seven Peaks School unique is flexibility. As an independent school, we are able to explore progressive ways of teaching and learning without the limitations of standardized testing. One thing we see everyday is that kids learn best by tinkering, making, creating, designing, innovating, and hands-on activities. Our Celebration of Innovation in middle school is a successful piece of the design cycle curriculum when students solve real world problems with the opportunity to make a real impact in the world.
We’re excited to bring design and innovation opportunities to all of our students, so our new Design & Innovation Lab is in the works! Our new lab will be equipped with a multi-media center, three-dimensional equipment, and innovative technology and software to inspire and engage our students at all grade levels.
At Seven Peaks we value Information Technology Skills (ITS) and integrate technology in our regular classes. ITS helps students understand technology concepts, systems and operations, and provides increased digital literacy. ITS provides background knowledge, and we reach beyond it with program and product design primarily through the International Baccalaureate Design Cycle. Students use critical and creative thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, and solve problems. They make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources to develop a solution or complete a project. Critical and creative thinking encourage options for solutions and hearing different points of view. The benefits are having fun while learning with others and learning language to use while problem solving collaboratively. Design and innovation allows the freedom to experiment, take risks and fail, and start over again. Students will tinker, create, design, collaborate, succeed, fail, and become believers in a mentality of, “Anything is possible if you put your mind to it!”
